THE PROVINCE OF MENDOZA
In the western part of Argentina, bordering the country of Chile, stands the province of Mendoza, world famous for its excellent wines. This province produces nearly 70% of the wines made in the country; and Argentina is the 5th largest wine producer in the world.
Mendoza City is located 1085 kilometers west of Buenos Aires City (Argentina’s capital city) and 670 kilometers south west of Córdoba. Mendoza is 750 meters above sea level on average. Moreover, the city has a semiarid climate and the annual average temperature is 18º C.
Mendoza, the "land of sun and good wine", as it is usually called, is the most important viticulture (the science and art of grape growing) region of the country. Besides, viticulture represents one of the most significant economic activities of the province. This area has seen great technological improvements in the past 10 years and has become a center for wine connoisseurs to visit, relax, and study the marvelous Malbec grape for which Argentina is so well known.
The glaciers at the top of the mountains supply the necessary water to water the fruit-trees and plantations of Mendoza, as well as the vineyards, from which the famous Argentine wines are produced. Wine and its production are the grounds for a traditional festivity in the Province and the whole country, the National Vintage Festivity (from March 05 to March 08).
TRADITIONAL DINING
On your tour you will sample many of the traditional Mendoza dishes, such as tableta mendocina, humita en chala and the famous tortitas raspadas (cookies) for breakfast or snacks. In addition to the traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) with an assortment of regional salads and desserts, you can sample empanadas, puchero, carbonada, cazuela de gallina or vegetales al disco. Mendoza and San Juan together account for 90% of the country's wine production, and together are one of the world's four major producers of fine wines. Wine lovers, you are home.
